Attendance Guidelines:

Washington State Attendance Law

RCW 28A.225.010, or the Becca Bill, requires children in Washington, ages 8 to 17, to attend public school, private school, or to receive home-based instruction (homeschooling). Each of Washington’s school districts addresses the definition of unexcused absences and interventions in a manner consistent with school board policies. Similarly, local juvenile courts address the petition process in a manner consistent with local county juvenile justice priorities and resources.

Excused Absences

Permission to be absent from school for reason(s) other than illness may be granted when requested by the parent(s) and/or guardian(s) and agreed upon by the school authorities. Absences will be excused if they are for illness, medical/dental appointments, bereavement, family emergency, court appearances, or if the student has received an approval by the school for a pre-excused planned absence. School related activities requiring a student to miss class count as an excused absence.

Upon returning to school following an absence, students must clear their absence by either a note or a phone call from a parent and/or guardian stating the time and reason for the absence. Failure to clear this absence within two business days may result in the appropriate level of discipline. These excused absences become a part of the student's attendance record. A pattern of excessive excused absences may result in school authorities requesting a doctor's verification of illness or a referral to the Community Truancy Board.

Unexcused Absences

A student is considered unexcused when he/she misses all or part of a class period and it does not meet the criteria listed above, or does not get excused within two business days.

Truancy Petitions

Under the Becca Bill, RCW 28A.225.030, school districts are mandated to file a petition in court on behalf of a student with seven or more unexcused absences in a month or ten unexcused absences in a year. Sequim School District Community Truancy Board (CTB) was established as an intervention prior to going to court to assist students and their families in resolving obstacles to attendance and to re-engage students in our community. Sequim School District has opted to file petitions at five unexcused absences, to be referred to CTB, as an early intervention tool.

Homework Policy
It is the student's responsibility to arrange for all make-up work following an excused absence. For elementary students, it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility. After a student has been absent for two days due to illness, you may request homework by contacting the Attendance Office. Please allow 24 hours for teachers to prepare homework materials. You may pick up any homework in the Main Office.
